York Economics Society

Presidents Welcome

Welcome to the home of EconSoc!

Our goal for the coming year is to primarily continue on the excellent work achieved by the previous commitee and allow members of our society to contribute more towards the direction that the society goes in. Together, we aim to encourage participation not only within existing students but the next cohort of freshers too, allowing Economics students to build a network they can remain part of beyond the three years we have at university.

We hope to diversify our career events, allowing students to see a broader picture of where they can end up after uni. Building on the success of our event with Sir Vince Cable on the Dusk of Globalisation we wish to invite many high profile speakers to York to improve our knowledge of the world around us as well helping us all build excellent links in our networks.

We will continue to provide fun, exciting and well attended socials for our members to improve peer relationships aiding group study and enriching your overall student experience.

We look forward to meeting you all soon!

Natanya Grant & Scarlett Hateley

Both are third year Finalist students who were previously both Social Secs for the Economics Society.

About Us

Being one of the largest departments at the University of York, Economics and related studies are undeniably interwined with the DNA of the institution. Therefore it’s only right that the Economics Society is one of the largest, most prestigious academic societies on campus. Our role is to provide a foundation for our members to spring off and achieve their upmost potential of their chosen fields, flourishing in both social and academic settings. As well as this, we aim to provide our members with the career focused support structure necessary for them to continue to succeed during their time here and long after graduating.

We achieve these aims by starting the year off with our highly acclaimed freshers week, followed by a regular variety of our traditional socials – the perfect environment for close bonds to be made between Economics students across all three years. This not only improves overall academic achievement but also helps members take full advantage of university life, enabling them to create and maintain a network that exists long after graduation. We also frequently hold opportunities to network, inviting a wide variety of speakers from Politicians to CEO’s to any one of our deep pool of high achieving alumni. Exposing our members to this wealth of knowledge provides an invaluable insight into ideas surrounding the future of Economics, supplimenting their degree. Combining this with advice regarding internships and graduate roles we aim to leave our members in the best possible stead to bolster their employability.

Our ambition here at the UoY Economics Society is to provide the optimal experience for anyone, with any level of interest in Economics, so if you want to make the most of your time at York, you’ve come to the right place.

Freshers Week

Econsoc Freshers week 2017 is the ultimate way to meet your coursemate and break the ice with people who you will be studying with, crying with and celerating with for the next three years. We have three different events running throughout the week starting off the fun with an Econsoc BBQ; the perfect way for you to relax whilst getting to know your coursemates and the committee. Tuesday sees you putting on your Econsoc freshers shirt for the return of the infamous Econsoc Pub Quiz bar crawl, starting on Heslington West in D-Bar and ending up in Kuda! On Friday we tee off against Club of PEP in Pub Golf, get your caps and polos ready! The price of our ticket includes membership to the society for the entirety of your three years here, as well as food at the BBQ and a t shirt for the bar crawl!

Events

Socials

We regularly host social events for our members to go out on and have fun, starting from our very own Economics freshers week when you join!

Socials over the last year included a Pub Quiz, nights out with themes such as Glitter, Jungle and Golf as well as a Winter black tie event! We also hold non – drinking events such as Pizza and movies.

Speakers

As one of the biggest and oldest societies at York we use our position at a prestigious university to invite well known speakers from around the world to speak to our members.

Speakers range from finance proffessionals to journalists to politicians! The most recent speaker we had has been Vince Cable who spoke on “The dusk of Globalization.”

Careers

We are lucky enough to have excellent sponsors, who come in throughout the year to offer and explain their internship and grad schemes available.

EconSoc has had thousands of members over the years & our talented graduates who work in various fields come back to talk to you about the world of work.
